Frontiers in Energy 2013, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 399-405 doi: 10.1007/s11708-013-0260-z

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the energy consumption (EC) and find out the determining factors of energy-efficient office building cases according to specific case studies in typical cities of different climate zones in China. The investigated building cases were located in four cities (Beijing, Ningbo, Nanjing and Shenzhen) of three architecture thermotechnical design zones (cold zone, hot summer and cold winter zone, hot summer and warm winter zone). The analysis indicates that the energy consumption index (ECI) of these four cases ranges from 41.06 to 74.23 kW·h/(m ·a). Besides, the outdoor climate can change the EC of air conditioning/heating systems, and further determine the monthly volatility of the total EC of the whole building.

Genomic regions associated with the sex-linked inhibitor of dermal melanin in Silkie chicken

Ming TIAN,Rui HAO,Suyun FANG,Yanqiang WANG,Xiaorong GU,Chungang FENG,Xiaoxiang HU,Ning LI

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2014, Volume 1, Issue 3,   Pages 242-249 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2014018

Abstract: A unique characteristic of the Silkie chicken is its fibromelanosis phenotype. The dermal layer of its skin, its connective tissue and shank dermis are hyperpigmented. This dermal hyperpigmentation phenotype is controlled by the sex-linked inhibitor of dermal melanin gene ( ) and the dominant fibromelanosis allele. This study attempted to confirm the genomic region associated with . By genotyping, was found to be closely linked to the region between GGA_rs16127903 and GGA_rs14685542 (8406919 bp) on chromosome Z, which contains ten functional genes. The expression of these genes was characterized in the embryo and 4 days after hatching and it was concluded that , encoding methylthioadenosinephosphorylase, would be the most likely candidate gene. Finally, target DNA capture and sequence analysis was performed, but no specific SNP(s) was found in the targeted region of the Silkie genome. Further work is necessary to identify the causal mutation located on chromosome Z.

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2015, Volume 2, Issue 3,   Pages 237-241 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2015057

Abstract: Meat quality is one of the most important economic traits in pig breeding. It has been reported that the composition of type II muscle fibers is correlated with meat quality in pigs. Type II muscle fibers contain three isoforms, IIa, IIb and IIx, which contain specific myofibrillar proteins MYH2, MYH4 and MYH1, respectively. In this study, the expression levels of , , and genes in the Longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle were measured in 114 Yorkshire pigs. Further, the correlations between the expression level of genes and the meat quality traits of intramuscular fat, drip loss, water-holding capacity and postmortem pH values were analyzed. The results showed that the expression level of was positively correlated with the intramuscular fat ( = 0.20, <0.05). The expression levels of and were negatively correlated with the pH at 24 h post mortem (pH ; = -0.28, <0.01; = -0.25, <0.01, respectively). Besides, the 60K SNP chip was used for genotyping the individuals. Genome wide association analysis indicated that 15 SNPs were significantly associated with the expression levels of these three genes. The results indicated the expression levels of , and genes could be useful markers for improvement of meat quality in pigs.

Abstract:

Based on the two-dimensional flow model and by applying the finite volume method and unstructured mesh, the waterlogging and drainage of the Datong Lake Region, heartland of the Dongting Lake Plain under various rainstorms were studied. The spatial distribution of waterlogging in the Datong Lake Region and the ratio of waterlogging were obtained. The negative influences of the increased intensity of the rainstorms on the waterlogging were analyzed quantitatively. The results of the research can provide technological support to the waterlogging forecasting and assessment.

about smart thermostats by chi-square test, signal detection theory, and fuzzy detection theory in regions

Pedro PONCE, Therese PEFFER, Arturo MOLINA

Frontiers in Energy 2019, Volume 13, Issue 3,   Pages 522-538 doi: 10.1007/s11708-018-0562-2

Abstract: It is well known that smart thermostats (STs) have become key devices in the implementation of smart homes; thus, they are considered as primary elements for the control of electrical energy consumption in households. Moreover, energy consumption is drastically affected when the end users select unsuitable STs or when they do not use the STs correctly. Furthermore, in future, Mexico will face serious electrical energy challenges that can be considerably resolved if the end users operate the STs in a correct manner. Hence, it is important to carry out an in-depth study and analysis on thermostats, by focusing on social aspects that influence the technological use and performance of the thermostats. This paper proposes the use of a signal detection theory (SDT), fuzzy detection theory (FDT), and chi-square (CS) test in order to understand the perceptions and beliefs of end users about the use of STs in Mexico. This paper extensively shows the perceptions and beliefs about the selected thermostats in Mexico. Besides, it presents an in-depth discussion on the cognitive perceptions and beliefs of end users. Moreover, it shows why the expectations of the end users about STs are not met. It also promotes the technological and social development of STs such that they are relatively more accepted in complex electrical grids such as smart grids.

Matrix attachment regions included in a bicistronic vector enhances and stabilizes follistatin gene expressions

Xiaoming HU,Jing GUO,Chunling BAI,Zhuying WEI,Li GAO,Tingmao HU,Shorgan BOU,Guangpeng LI

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2016, Volume 3, Issue 1,   Pages 87-96 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2016087

Abstract: In the present study, follistatin ( ) gene expression vectors with either a bicistronic gene transfer cassette alone, or a bicistron gene cassette carrying a matrix attachment region (MAR) were constructed and transfected to bovine fetal fibroblasts. Evaluations of both the integration and expression of exogenous indicated that the pMAR-CAG-FST-IRES-AcGFP1-polyA-MAR (pMAR-FST) vector had higher capacity to form monoclonal transgenic cells than the vector without MAR, though transient transfection and integration efficiency were similar with either construct. Remarkably, protein expression in transgenic cells with the pMAR-FST vector was significantly higher than that from the bicistronic vector. Exogenous was expressed in all of the pMAR-FST transgenic mice at F , F and F . Total muscle growth in F mice was significantly greater than in wild-type mice, with larger muscles in fore and hind limbs of transgenic mice. pMAR-FST transgenic mice were also found with more evenly distributed muscle bundles and thinner spaces between sarcolemma, which suggests a correlation between transgene expression-associated muscle development and the trend of muscle growth. In conclusion, a pMAR-FST vector, which excluded the resistant genes and frame structure, enhances and stabilizes gene expressions in both transfected cells and transgenic mice.
